Here's a scientific update. Not good!

"Global Cloud Coverage Shifting in Ominous Sign of Climate Change

We didn’t know enough about clouds until now. What a new study reveals is bad news

... Some of that uncertainty was lifted Monday, and the news isn't good. A new study in Nature analyzes almost 30 years of weather observations to show that clouds and cloudiness are changing in the way scientists would expect in a warming world. Continental storm tracks—think jet stream—are shifting poleward, leaving populous subtropical latitudes uncovered. And the clouds that are forming more often aren't the low-lying, reflective ones that cool the planet—they're the huge cottony anvils that rise high in the sky, trapping more heat..."

I was speaking to an older Australian. He said that "Not in my lifetime." Unfortunately, change is accelerating. :!:

Bingo, as the signatories deliver on their pledge.

"US, China ratify Paris climate agreement

... Saturday's joint statement could spur further ratifications by the likes of Brazil and Canada.

"We expect a surge of ratifications around the U.N. Climate week later in September," said Bill Hare, chief executive of Climate Analytics.

In Paris last December, nearly 200 countries agreed on a binding global compact to slash greenhouse gases and keep global temperature increases to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius.
Experts have said the temperature target is already in danger of being breached, with the U.N.'s weather agency saying 2016 is on course to be the warmest year since records began."

Richmond is one of the 5 worst communities to be hit by climate change.

"FACING THE CHANGE: 5 CANADIAN COMMUNITIES THREATENED BY CLIMATE CHANGE NOW

... A 2014 provincial study found that by 2100, major flooding that once happened every 200 to 500 years could happen every 50 years."

Cities south of Vancouver are among the best prepared for those so called changes with protection based on natural earth and machinery as well.

Good news!!!  :D

"Global Deal Reached to Limit Powerful Greenhouse Gases

Nearly 200 nations have reached a deal, announced Saturday morning after all-night negotiations, to limit the use of greenhouse gases far more powerful than carbon dioxide in a major effort to fight climate change.
The talks on hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, were called the first test of global will since the historic Paris Agreement to cut carbon emissions was reached last year. HFCs are described as the world's fastest-growing climate pollutant and are used in air conditioners and refrigerators. Experts say cutting them is the fastest way to reduce global warming.

The new agreement, unlike the broader Paris one, is legally binding. It caps and reduces the use of HFCs in a gradual process beginning by 2019 with action by developed countries including the United States, the world's second-worst polluter. More than 100 developing countries, including China, the world's top carbon emitter, will start taking action by 2024, when HFC consumption levels should peak..."

Personally I think the City should focus on the issues of the day, but typical Gregor focusing on all the fringe issues that aren't really part of his mandate

It's the task of the CEO to scan the horizon and identify long term risks. To organize research and formulate plans, in order to understand the nature of the problem. It's a requirement of leadership to mobilize constituents to work together in their own interests.

The Mayor needs to prod senior government to act together and in a timely fashion. to protect future generations. This is not China. We can't expect a Great Leader to call a great crusade to save our shoreline. In Canada, everything must start from local initiative.

Here's a multi-general perspective of the problem.

"Climate Change Means Moving. Just Don't Say 'Retreat.'

Thanks to the vagaries of geography and currents, sea levels in the northeastern U.S. are rising faster than almost anywhere in the world. By 2040, the federal government expects the ocean to rise at least one foot along the coast of New Jersey, putting almost 9,000 homes permanently underwater and exposing many more to ever-worsening storms and flooding.

That poses an almost impossible task for government: There's not enough money to save every community, nor are most people willing to leave their homes -- yet.

... I think it's going to be town by town -- some concerned mayor or emergency manager who just decides this is what they're going to do. It becomes a mission for them, because they are so heartbroken or concerned.

... The archaeology makes me more optimistic. But it's going to cost a lot, and that's what we're not ready to think about. Ancient civilizations have walked away from a lot of infrastructure.

As a species, it's not coastal climate change that's going to threaten us. It's the heat. There's no place to run from that."

We all know that Trump is a renowned braggart and proven liar. The gold standard for stupid statements and juvenile behaviour. It's so bad that it's not funny.

On this forum, we have one individual who tries to emulate The Donald. You know who that is!!!!

Back on topic, the time for action is NOW before it is too late.

"West Antarctica Begins to Destabilize With ‘Intense Unbalanced Melting’

Warmer ocean water is attacking ice at its base, adding dangerously to sea-level rise.

... The bottom of the world has drawn increased scrutiny from scientists over the last few years, as West Antarctic ice loss in some places shows signs of becoming “unstoppable.” There’s enough water locked up in West Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea region alone to raise the global average sea level by four feet, and it’s the fastest-melting spot on the continent. The National Science Foundation and a U.K. counterpart last week announced that they’ll fund up to $25 million in research that will help the scientific community better understand the timing and mechanics of a critical glacier, the Thwaites. It’s basically the climate-science equivalent of an FBI “Most Wanted” poster.

A study issued on Tuesday in Nature Communications measures directly just how dramatically glaciers are being gnawed at from beneath. The research focuses on those that empty into a section of the Amundsen Sea just south of the Thwaites Glacier. A significant portion of Antarctica is now subject to “intense unbalanced melting,” the authors write..."

Just as things are heading in the right direction, Trump gets elected. The sunbelt is toast. Just as well that I have moved from the sea wall to higher ground.

I'll leave the technical stuff to the experts, and the denial to the uneducated.

"Ignoring Climate Change Just Got More Expensive

A leading economist looks at what the world is doing to slow global warming. His conclusion: not much.

.... Even after adjusting for uncertainty, he writes, there is “virtually no chance” that nations will prevent the world from warming more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit), the upper bound for avoiding cascading catastrophes..."
